There is something deeply comforting about a perfectly steamed bowl of rice. When prepared properly, medium grain rice becomes glossy, tender, and lightly sticky, the perfect base for traditional Japanese toppings.

This simple rice bowl highlights the clean flavor and balanced texture of Organic Kokuho Rose® Medium Grain Rice, topped with classic furikake seasoning, toasted sesame seeds, and sliced nori.

It is minimal, traditional, and incredibly satisfying.

Ingredients

Serves 2–3

• 1 cup Organic Kokuho Rose® Medium Grain Rice
• 1 ¼ cups water
• 2–3 teaspoons furikake seasoning (salmon or classic blend)
• 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds
• 1 sheet nori, thinly sliced
• Optional: small splash of soy sauce

How to Cook Perfect Medium Grain Rice

1. Rinse the Rice

Place rice in a bowl and rinse under cold water. Gently swirl and drain. Repeat 3–4 times until the water runs mostly clear. This removes excess surface starch and ensures clean, glossy grains.

2. Soak (Optional but Recommended)

After rinsing, let the rice sit in measured water for 15–20 minutes before cooking. This allows the grains to hydrate evenly.

3. Cook

Stovetop method:

• Combine rice and 1 ¼ cups water in a saucepan
• Bring to a gentle boil
• Cover and reduce to low
• Simmer 15 minutes
• Remove from heat and let steam (covered) 10 more minutes

Do not lift the lid while cooking.

4. Fluff Properly

Use a rice paddle or fork to gently fluff and fold the rice. Avoid stirring aggressively.

The rice should appear glossy, tender, and slightly sticky, perfect for topping.

Assemble the Rice Bowl

Spoon warm rice into bowls.

Top with:

• A light sprinkle of furikake
• A pinch of toasted sesame seeds
• Thin strips of nori

Serve immediately while warm.

For extra flavor, add a few drops of soy sauce just before eating.

What Is Furikake?

Furikake is a traditional Japanese rice seasoning blend. It commonly contains:

• Dried seaweed
• Toasted sesame seeds
• Dried fish flakes or salmon
• Salt and sugar

It adds texture, umami, and subtle sweetness to steamed rice.
